Giza Pyramids Tour: Local Guides, Sakkara & More

The Giza Plateau is the one place in Egypt that lives up to the postcards, and still surprises you once you're standing on the sand. A good giza pyramids tour is about more than the big three: it's choosing the right viewpoint, the right hour and the right company. We've pulled together local-guide options that take you from the plateau itself out to the older, quieter pyramids further south.

Where is Giza Pyramids?

Giza sits on the west bank of the Nile, on the edge of the desert just southwest of central Cairo. The pyramid plateau is part of Greater Cairo, so it's easy to reach from hotels in both Giza and Cairo. Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur lie further south along the same desert edge, and the Grand Egyptian Museum stands close to the plateau.

Best time to visit

October to April is the most comfortable time for walking the plateau, with milder days and softer light. Summer is very hot in the middle of the day, so if you come then, we'd suggest the earliest slot you can manage. Whatever the season, mornings are generally the easiest time to be out on the sand.

5. Compare the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur

6. Spend time in the Egyptian countryside

the Saqqara and Dahshur day includes meeting villagers and a traditional bread-making experience with local women. Another option pairs the Grand Egyptian Museum, its Great Staircase and gardens with the Giza pyramids.

How many days do you need?

You can do a focused Giza visit in a couple of hours with the photoshoot, which runs about 45 to 90 minutes of shooting time. For the wider picture, a full day covers either Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur, or the Grand Egyptian Museum with the pyramids. If you have three days, we'd suggest one for each style of tour.

These tours are run by local guides and photographers, from a short photo session on the plateau to full days out of Cairo. Pick the one that matches how much time you have and what you want to remember most.
