When is the best time to visit Algeria? For the north, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are best: warm, sunny days that suit the cities, the coast and the Roman sites. For the Sahara, go between October and March, when days are pleasant and nights are cold. Summer is good for the beaches but too hot for the desert, and winter brings rain to the coast and snow to the highlands. Algeria is a very large country, so the right month depends on where you are going. This guide breaks it down by region and month, with the 2027 holidays and festivals to plan around.

The short answer

  • Best overall: October to November and March to April, when you can combine the north and the Sahara.
  • Best for the Sahara: October to March.
  • Best for cities and Roman sites: March to May and September to November.
  • Best for beaches: June to September.
  • Hardest months: July and August in the south, and wet, cold spells in the mountains in January and February.

Algeria’s three climates

Algeria has three main climates: Mediterranean on the coast, continental in the highlands and desert in the Sahara.

Region Climate Best months
The coast: Algiers, Oran, Tipaza, Annaba Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters April to June, September to October
The highlands: Constantine, Sétif, Timgad, Djemila, Tlemcen Hot summers and cold winters, sometimes with snow April to June, September to October
The Sahara: Djanet, Timimoun, Ghardaïa, Taghit Desert: very hot summers, mild days and cold nights in winter October to March

Algeria month by month

Month by month, the north is best in spring and autumn and the Sahara is best from October to March.

Month North Sahara
January Cool and rainy; cold in the highlands Sunny days, freezing nights
February Cool, with almond blossom by the end of the month Good
March Spring begins, green countryside Very good
April Excellent Good, getting warm; windy spells
May Excellent, warm Hot
June Warm; beach season starts Very hot
July Hot; busy beaches Extreme heat
August Hot; busy beaches Extreme heat
September Very good; warm sea Still hot
October Excellent Season opens, very good
November Good; first rains Excellent
December Cool and rainy Excellent; busy at New Year

Season by season

Each season suits a different part of Algeria, so match the season to the region you want to see.

  • Spring (March to May): the north is green and covered in wildflowers, the Roman sites are at their most beautiful, and the desert is still pleasant in March.
  • Summer (June to August): Algerians head to the coast. Good for beaches around Oran, Béjaïa and Tipaza, but too hot for the Sahara and the inland ruins at midday.
  • Autumn (September to November): warm sea, mild cities and the start of the desert season. October and November are the best months to combine north and south.
  • Winter (December to February): peak season in the Sahara, with clear skies and starry nights. The north is cool and wet, and the highlands can get snow.

Holidays and festivals in 2027

Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar and move about 11 days earlier each year. The 2027 dates below are approximate and depend on the sighting of the moon.

Yennayer (Amazigh New Year) January 12 A national holiday with family meals and celebrations, especially in Kabylie
Ramadan About February 8 to March 9 Fasting by day, slower days and lively evenings; many restaurants close in daytime

Tips for timing your trip

  • Book New Year in the Sahara early. Djanet and Timimoun are busiest from late December to early January.
  • Avoid long-distance travel on Eid days, when buses, trains and flights fill up.
  • Bring layers in winter. Desert nights and the highlands can be close to freezing.
  • Remember the weekend: it falls on Friday and Saturday.
  • Check flight schedules, since some desert routes are seasonal.
