Do you need a visa for Algeria? Yes. Almost every Western visitor needs a visa, and in most cases you must get it from an Algerian embassy or consulate before you travel. There is no general visa on arrival and no e-visa for ordinary tourism. The one important exception is Sahara tourism: travelers on a southern desert trip booked with an approved Algerian agency can be pre-approved and collect their visa on arrival. This guide explains both routes, the documents embassies ask for, how long you can stay and the mistakes that delay applications, with the official sources linked.

The quick answer
- Do I need a visa? Yes, if you hold a US, UK, EU, Canadian or Australian passport, and so do most other nationalities. A few countries are exempt; check with the embassy.
- Where do I apply? At the Algerian embassy or consulate that serves the country where you live.
- Is there a visa on arrival? Only for Sahara tourism booked through an Algerian agency approved by the Ministry of Tourism, and only with pre-approval.
- Is there an e-visa? Not for general tourism. Rely on the embassy route or the Sahara scheme.
- What do I need? A passport valid for at least six months, forms, photos, a flight itinerary, travel insurance and a hotel booking, invitation or agency certificate.
Route 1: a visa from an Algerian embassy
The standard route is a tourist visa from an Algerian embassy or consulate before you travel. It works for any itinerary, including the northern cities, the Roman sites and the coast.
- Find the right office. Apply where you legally live. Some embassies use an outside visa center for appointments and document checks.
- Prepare the file using the embassy’s own checklist (see below).
- Submit and wait. The Algerian Embassy in Washington says processing usually takes about five to eight business days, depending on nationality, and within 48 hours for organized groups traveling through a tour agency.
- Check the visa when you get your passport back: dates, number of entries and name spelling.
Apply well ahead of your trip, especially around holidays, since appointment slots and extra document requests can add time.
Documents embassies ask for
Each embassy publishes its own list, so use the one for your country. The Algerian Embassy in Washington asks for the following for a tourist visa.
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for at least six months, with a photocopy |
| Application form | Two completed forms, each with an original signature |
| Photos | Two recent passport photos on a white background |
| Flights | A copy of your airline itinerary |
| Insurance | Travel insurance with repatriation assistance |
| Where you will stay | One of: a hotel reservation, a certificate of accommodation from your host legalized at the town hall in Algeria, or a certificate from a travel agency describing the trip |
If you book a tour, the Algerian agency usually provides the certificate or invitation you need. Ask for it early.
Route 2: Sahara tourism visa on arrival
Algeria created a special scheme to make desert trips easier. According to Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it applies only to tourists traveling to the south as part of Saharan tourism through agencies approved by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts.
- Book with an approved agency for a southern itinerary, for example Djanet and Tassili n’Ajjer or Tamanrasset.
- The agency registers you with the authorities in advance.
- You receive an official document with a QR code confirming that your entry visa has been approved.
- You collect the visa on arrival, usually at the southern airport where your trip starts or at the airport named in your approval.
This is not a general visa on arrival. It is tied to the desert trip. If you also want to travel independently in the north, ask your agency what your approval covers, or get a normal embassy visa instead. Rules and procedures can change, so confirm with the agency and the embassy before you book flights.
How long you can stay
A visa’s validity and the length of each stay are two different things. Algerian visas can be valid for different periods and for one or several entries, but the Algerian Embassy in Washington says a single stay may not exceed 90 days and total stays may not exceed 180 days per year. Most tourist visas are issued for the dates of your planned trip, so ask for enough time when you apply.
On arrival in Algeria
Arrival is straightforward if your papers are in order: show your passport and visa, fill in the arrival form and keep a few documents close at hand.
- Fill in the arrival form and keep your accommodation address handy.
- Declare foreign currency if asked, and keep exchange receipts. The dinar cannot be taken out of the country.
- Keep your passport with you at all times. You will need it at checkpoints and hotels.
- Know your itinerary. Police may ask where you are going, especially if you travel by road.
Mistakes that delay applications
- A passport with less than six months’ validity or too few blank pages.
- A host invitation that has not been legalized at the town hall in Algeria.
- Applying at an embassy outside your country of residence.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.
- Assuming the Sahara scheme covers a trip that is mostly in the north.
