Do you need a visa for Syria? Yes. Almost every visitor needs one, and in late 2026 most nationalities get it on arrival at Damascus or Aleppo airport or at the land borders with Lebanon and Jordan. The catch is that many travelers need entry approval before they set off, especially if they fly in, and the rules change often. Syria’s planned e-visa is not working yet. This guide explains how the system works today, who needs approval first, which borders are open and what to bring, with links to the sources we used.

The quick answer

  • Do I need a visa? Yes, unless you hold a Syrian passport or ID.
  • Can I get it on arrival? Most nationalities can, at Damascus and Aleppo airports and at the Masnaa (Lebanon) and Nassib (Jordan) border crossings.
  • Do I need approval first? Many travelers do. Several tour operators report that all air arrivals need entry approval, and a list of nationalities needs it at every entry point.
  • Is there an e-visa? Not yet. The official portal still showed “Coming Soon” in October 2026.
  • How long can I stay? A single-entry visa is usually for up to one month.
  • How do I pay? In US dollars, in cash.

Visa on arrival: how it works

The visa on arrival is the main way into Syria for visitors in 2026. You queue at immigration, show your passport and any approval document, pay the fee in US dollars cash and receive a visa in your passport.

Fees depend on your nationality and change from time to time, so check the current amount with your airline, tour operator or the nearest Syrian embassy before you travel. Bring the exact amount in clean, recent US dollar notes, because cards are not accepted and change can be hard to find.

Who needs approval before traveling

Entry approval is a security clearance arranged in advance, usually through a licensed Syrian travel agency or tour operator. Whether you need one depends on how you arrive and on your passport, and the sources do not fully agree.

  • Arriving by air: tour operators in Syria report that every traveler landing at Damascus or Aleppo needs approval before flying. Some airlines, such as flydubai, will not let you board without an “OK to board” requested at least 48 hours before the flight.
  • Arriving by land: most nationalities get the visa on arrival at the Lebanese and Jordanian borders without approval.
  • Restricted nationalities: operators list nationalities that need approval at every entry point, including travelers from the United States, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, South Africa and South Korea. The list changes without notice.
  • Processing time: reported waits run from a few days to around a month, and longer for restricted nationalities. Approval is typically valid for entry within three months.

Do not buy a non-refundable flight until your approval is confirmed. If you travel with a local guide or tour company, ask them to arrange the approval as part of your booking.

Airports and land borders

Four entry points are open to foreign visitors in 2026: two airports and two land crossings.

Entry point From Notes
Damascus International Airport Gulf states, Turkey, Jordan and more Main airport, about 25 km southeast of Damascus. Approval usually needed before flying.
Aleppo International Airport Regional flights Visa on arrival available; check approval rules with your airline.
Masnaa / Jdeidet Yabous Lebanon (Beirut) The usual overland route from Beirut to Damascus.
Nassib / Jaber Jordan (Amman) The overland route from Amman to Damascus.

The land borders with Turkey are not open to foreign tourists. If you plan to combine Syria with Jordan or Lebanon, the land crossings can be the simplest option, but make sure you also have the right visa for the country you are coming from.

The Syria e-visa

Syria has announced an e-visa at evisa.sy, but it is not live yet. The portal showed “Coming Soon” when it was checked in September and October 2026, even though some Syrian embassy pages already point to it. Until it opens, use the visa on arrival with approval where needed.

Documents to bring

Have these ready at immigration, on paper as well as on your phone:

  • A passport valid for at least six months, with no Israeli stamps
  • Your entry approval document, if you needed one
  • A return or onward ticket
  • The address of your hotel or host
  • The visa fee in US dollars cash
  • Your travel insurance details (strongly recommended; check that the policy names Syria)

Journalists need permission from Syria’s Ministry of Information. Travelers who are also Syrian citizens should carry their Syrian passport or ID card.

Reasons you can be refused entry

A few things can get you turned away at the border, whatever your nationality.

  • Israeli passports are not admitted, and the UK notes that Israeli and Iranian citizens cannot enter.
  • Israeli stamps in your passport, or an Egyptian or Jordanian stamp from a crossing into Israel, can lead to refusal.
  • Missing approval when your nationality or route requires it.
  • Using a different passport from the one you used to enter Lebanon or Jordan, if you hold two nationalities.

How long you can stay

A single-entry tourist visa is usually valid for up to one month, although officers sometimes stamp 15 days. Check the stamp before you leave the desk. Extensions are handled by the Immigration and Passports Department in Damascus. A transit visa of up to 15 days is also reported for travelers passing through from Jordan.
