Arayes

Arayes is a traditional Middle Eastern dish that has gained popularity in recent years due to its delicious taste and versatility. The dish consists of ground beef that has been seasoned with spices, such as cinnamon, allspice, and cumin, and stuffed into pita bread before being grilled or baked until crispy.

The result is a mouth-watering combination of tender meat and crispy bread that is sure to satisfy any appetite. However, the word arayes are known in Lebanon, referring to stuffed pitas, that’s always ideal for weekend nights, easy dinner, or a quick launch. In Egypt, for example, you can find the same ingredients and packed flattened bread, but this time it’s called hawawshi.

What is Arayes?

We’re so excited to tell you about one of the most underrated, delicious, favorable, and simple recipes. Just pita (in Egypt, this pita turns out to be flatbread or ash baladi) pockets filled with lamb or seasoned minced meat will satisfy you! But we don’t let you eat bread stuffed with beef thing. No, your pita will be fried until crispy. It’s an organic obsession for many Middle Eastern people. If you have the chance to take a tour with a local guide in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, or Turkey, arayes must be included!

It’s one of the meals that will take only 30 minutes, and many street food vendors serve it as a snack. Once you taste it, you would love to make it at home to please your whole household.

While the exact origin of arayes is uncertain, it is believed to have originated in the Levant region of the Middle East. However, variations of this dish can be found throughout the Middle East and North Africa, each with their unique ingredients and cooking methods. Some versions use lamb or chicken instead of beef, while others add vegetables such as onions, peppers, and tomatoes to the filling.
